The Dynamics AX brand has been officially retired by Microsoft. As of July 1, 2017, new customers will not be able to buy Dynamics AX 2012 R3.

This news coincides with the launch of the fully on-premises version of Dynamics 365 for Operations, known as Local Business Data.

Existing Dynamics AX customers will still be able to purchase additional licences, but after July 1 these will be according to the revised pricing. The existing licences for customers that stay on the current Enhancement Plan will not be affected.

Mainstream support for the final version of Dynamics AX is set to continue until October 2021.

Existing Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 customers who are current on the Enhancement Plan will no longer be able to upgrade to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012. Customers must upgrade directly to Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations.

Business Value Discounts will continue to be available for existing customers purchasing from Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3. However, Business Value Discounts will not be available on Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations (On-Premises).

The Dynamics AX brand, beginning at version 4.0 in March 2006, was the successor to Axapta which was originally developed by IBM and Damgaard Data and first released in 1998.
